Frequently Asked Questions

What is dimensional weight?
Dimensional weight (also called volumetric weight or DIM weight) is a pricing technique used in shipping that considers the package dimensions in addition to actual weight. It ensures carriers are compensated for the space a package occupies.
How is dimensional weight calculated?
Dimensional weight is calculated by multiplying Length × Width × Height, then dividing by a dimensional factor. For air freight, the typical factor is 5000 (for cm/kg) or 139 (for in/lbs). Ocean freight uses 1000 (cm/kg).
Which weight is used for billing - actual or dimensional?
Carriers bill based on whichever is greater: the actual weight or the dimensional weight. This is called the "chargeable weight" or "billable weight."
