How we would plan six heavy moves
Six plans for exporting machinery from the U.S., each built from published carrier schedules, equipment limits and export rules, with every figure cited. They are plans, not records of completed jobs; a real job replaces one only with the customer’s permission.
Project plan: haul trucks and drill rigs to a copper mine in Chile
Chile bought $464 million of U.S. off-highway dump trucks in 2024, third after Canada and Australia; trucks and drill rigs that drive can sail RoRo from Jacksonville to San Antonio, Chile, in 16 days, while the largest trucks ship in modules on a heavy-lift ship.
Read the planProject plan: a construction fleet to Australia
A fleet of excavators, loaders, dozers and graders for an Australian project can sail RoRo from Jacksonville to Melbourne in 30 to 32 days or to Brisbane in 36 to 39; every used machine must arrive free of soil and seeds, and machines shipped between 1 September and 30 April on flat racks or as breakbulk must be treated for stink bugs before they sail.

South Africa bought $85 million of U.S. wheeled tractors in 2024; tractors and combines that drive can sail RoRo from Jacksonville to Durban in 37 to 42 days on the voyages that call there, and compact tractors and implements can go by container on the direct U.S.–South Africa service.

Skid-mounted oilfield modules from the Houston area can sail RoRo from Freeport, Texas, to Lagos in 27 to 32 days on roll trailers rated up to 154 US tons (140 t) in one fleet; larger process modules go breakbulk on a heavy-lift ship, and any module that holds fuel or batteries ships as a hazardous material.
Read the planProject plan: a power transformer from the U.S. to Mexico
Mexico bought 47 of the 117 large liquid-filled transformers the U.S. exported in 2024; one goes by rail or permitted heavy haul across the land border, or by RoRo from Freeport, Texas, which reaches Altamira in 4 to 5 days on a roll trailer rated in one fleet for up to 154 US tons (140 t).

Blades, nacelles, hubs and tower sections from Texas to a wind farm in Brazil usually sail as breakbulk on a heavy-lift ship, whose holds in one fleet run to 351 ft 5 in (107.1 m) and whose cranes lift up to 2,205 US tons (2,000 t) together; pieces that fit a roll trailer can take the RoRo service from Freeport, Texas, which reaches Vitória in 18 to 24 days.
