Route Finder

Choose where the machine is, what it is and where it is going. The answer comes from our own data: road miles from 29 auction yards and 49 states to 21 U.S. seaports and the rail ramps, 21 published carrier sailings, TRAINS duty lines and the rules at both ends, each with its source and the date it was checked.

How the Route Finder works

  • Road miles come from OSRM (OpenStreetMap) routing between the yard gate, or the state’s largest city, and each port’s marine terminal gate. Truck hours assume 50 mph including stops.
  • The method comes from the same fit rules as our brand and model pages: container first, then flat rack, RoRo where a lane serves the destination, and breakbulk past flat-rack limits.
  • Sailings and transit days are the carriers’ published services, each linked to the schedule we read.
  • Duty is the UNCTAD TRAINS via World Bank WITS: MFN applied tariff simple average for the machine’s HS heading; VAT or GST is charged on CIF plus duty. The full table is in import duty on heavy equipment, by country
  • U.S. rules are cited to the Code of Federal Regulations and the agencies; destination rules to the importing country’s own customs or ministry.

Questions about routing a machine

Why is the closest port not always the one we use?
A main gateway with frequent direct services often beats a closer regional port, and RoRo loads only at ports with RoRo calls. The tool lists the closest container port, the main gateways and the closest RoRo ports so you can see the trade-off.
How do I know if my machine fits a container?
Choose its model. The tool checks its published transport dimensions and weight against a 20 ft box, a 40 ft high-cube, a flat rack and RoRo deck limits, and says what has to come off first.
What if no sailing is listed for my country?
We only list services a carrier publishes. Without one, we book a carrier that serves the country by transhipment, or a charter for project cargo.
How accurate is the duty figure?
It is the published MFN tariff for the machine’s HS heading and the import VAT on CIF plus duty. The broker’s classification, customs valuation, trade agreements and excise can change it.
Which U.S. rule catches used machines most often?
The 72-hour rule: a used self-propelled machine must be filed in AES at least 72 hours before export, with the title documents sent to CBP at the port.
