Shipping heavy equipment from the Port of Hueneme
Hueneme is a RoRo and project cargo port: car carriers from Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Glovis, K Line, NYK, Mitsui OSK and EUKOR take self-propelled machinery, five mobile harbor cranes handle breakbulk, and containers leave mainly on Maersk’s service to Mexico and Central America[1][3][5][7].
Official website: Oxnard Harbor District (Port of Hueneme). Terminal names and figures on this page come from its own publications, listed under Sources.
Container, flat rack, RoRo and breakbulk here
| Method | At this port | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Container | Yes | Maersk’s WCCA2 (U8E) service loads here southbound for Long Beach, Lázaro Cárdenas, Puerto Quetzal, Corinto and Balboa[5]. The port’s container trade is mainly with Guatemala, Costa Rica and Mexico, alongside the Del Monte and Chiquita fruit ships[1][6]. |
| Flat rack | No | We have not found a carrier publishing flat-rack capacity from Hueneme. The Maersk service calls Long Beach the day after it leaves[5], so flat racks are booked through Los Angeles–Long Beach. Use the Port of Los Angeles |
| RoRo | Yes | Car carriers from Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Glovis, K Line, NYK, Mitsui OSK and EUKOR call here[1]. The port counts self-propelled construction, mining and farm machinery as RoRo heavy equipment: 4,407 units came in and 311 went out in fiscal 2025[1][7]. |
| Breakbulk | Yes | Ports America runs two Liebherr LHM 420 cranes and one LHM 320, and Ceres two hybrid LHM 420s[3]. The port lists wind blades, power generators and pieces over 300 tons among recent project cargo[2]. |

Terminals and rail
The Oxnard Harbor District owns and runs the port, which shares its federal channel entrance and harbor with Naval Base Ventura County[1][6]. Commercial ships use Wharf 1 at the South Terminal, with two 900 ft berths and 39 ft 4 in (12 m) of water, and Wharf 2 at the North Terminal, with 34 ft 9 in (10.6 m); the largest ship the port lists is 800 ft 6 in (244 m) long[1]. Under a joint use agreement with the Navy, the port can also use Wharf 3 on the base and about 21 acres next to it[8]. Ports America, SSA Marine and Pacific Ro-Ro do the stevedoring, and Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Glovis America and BMW process vehicles at their own centers[1].
The Ventura County Railroad, a Genesee & Wyoming short line on track the harbor district owns, runs just over 12 miles on four branches to Union Pacific’s Coast Main Line in downtown Oxnard[4]. It reaches the port at the South Spur, built with rail platforms for vehicles, and at the North Spur, which ends inside the Navy base; the short line does all the switching[4]. Hueneme is about 60 miles north of Los Angeles[6], and we confirm the receiving processor or terminal when the booking is made.
Questions about shipping from Port Hueneme
Can I ship construction or farm machinery RoRo from Port Hueneme?
Yes. The car carriers that call take self-propelled tractors, loaders and other construction, mining and farm machinery, though far more of it is imported through Hueneme than exported.
Is there a container service from Port Hueneme?
Yes, but it is narrow. Maersk’s WCCA2 service loads here for Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama, and most container traffic is Latin American fruit. For flat racks or other destinations we book through Los Angeles–Long Beach.
Is Port Hueneme a Navy port?
It shares its harbor and channel entrance with Naval Base Ventura County. The commercial berths belong to the Oxnard Harbor District, which can also use the Navy’s Wharf 3 under a joint use agreement.
