"How much does it cost to ship an excavator to Africa?" is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is: it depends — but it depends on a knowable set of factors. Here's the anatomy of a heavy-equipment shipping cost so you can budget realistically.

The cost components

A landed cost is built from these line items:

  • Inland transport to the load port (often the biggest swing for auction buys far from a port).
  • Ocean freight — driven by method (RoRo vs container vs breakbulk), size/weight, and the lane.
  • Port and terminal charges at origin and destination.
  • Customs clearance and documentation at both ends.
  • Import duty and VAT/GST at destination — frequently the largest single item.
  • Destination delivery and any reassembly if the machine was dismantled.

The big variables

The same machine can vary widely in cost depending on:

  • Method. Drive-on RoRo is often the most economical for running, wheeled units. Containerizing protects the cargo and offers more sailings; breakbulk is for the truly over-gauge.   • Lane and season. Transit time and rates differ sharply by route — estimate yours with the transit-time estimator.
  • Destination taxes. This is where buyers get surprised. Duty and VAT can add anywhere from a few percent to well over 100% of the CIF value depending on the country, vehicle age, and engine size.
